|
|
Hello,
My question is can you also add the word “consciousness” to another word? And would the words be nouns? I'm not asking this question in the "applied linguistics section" because not so many people seem to visit it.
1. We must increase people’s eco-consciousness.
2. We must increase people’s health-consciousness.
3. We must increase people’s money-consciousness.
A student recently asked me this exact question.
Thanks in advance for any answers.
Best wishes, |

And just why is this posted on the Saudi Arabia board?
Seems more appropriate for the General Discussion section...

I'm still trying to figure out where the "applied linguistics section" is. |

If the OP puts it in General Discussion, it will get more attention, though some of it will likely be off-track anyway:-)
Maybe it's a wiser course to put it here where fewer rodents hang about!
Though so far no-one's been helpful, myself included.
I will give it a shot, though - econ-consciousness (and etc.)doesn't seem to be a word-in-use, but is grammatically ok so far as I can tell so if the context calls for it, why not? |

Alrighty...
Similarly, it's more commonly used as a phrasal adjective (noun + "conscious") depending on context:
Quote: |
More often, however, "conscious" appears as an adjective meaning “aware” or “awake,” or “involving perception or thought.” It also appears in combination with a noun in phrasal adjectives such as “budget conscious” to refer to someone who is concerned, sensitive, or vigilant about something.

So...
Their menu reflects the health consciousness of their diners.
They offer a menu for health-conscious diners.
Their menu is for diners who are health conscious. (Note: Be careful about hyphenation.) |

Hi guys,
I posted on this forum because the "real" teachers are in Saudi. I'm joking, but I do think you guys are for the most part the elite.
Best wishes, |

The elite? Well, we teachers who work/have worked in Saudi have been called many things, but I''m fairly sure this is a first.
Not that I'm disputing it, of course.

I see no reason not to use these; especially if you use the hyphen. Personally I would use the hyphen, simply because it looks much nicer (a very non-commital word (notice the hyphen). If these are not accvepted words now (which they are; in the same way that eco-awareness is) then they will be soon; and by that I mean they will be accepted into the hallowed pages of the Oxford Dictionary. Did you know that Blue-ray was only accepted last year? I think if you use a hyphen, you can create more things than God |
