Heya people, I have a question about available health insurance plans for expats in Vietnam. I need to look for insurance on my own since I won't qualify for a work permit and my school will probably not be able to help me with insurance. I was looking at World Nomads' insurance plans but I've found that it is quite costly, it would be around 100USd a month. Can anyone recommend a cheaper plan that I could consider, something that covers basic in-patient hospital treatment costs. |

I use Liberty Healthcare Insurance (www.LibertyInsurance.com.vn)
I should add that I use them, but I've never used them. I haven't heard of any problems from people who have though. Premiums are dependant on age.
Insurance is worth having as the standard of care you would receive in a local hospital would be somewhat less than you would expect at home and your comfort would suffer considerably. Also note that insurance companies might not pay out for motorbike accidents (possibly the most common thing to happen) unless you have a Vietnamese licence, are wearing a helmet and aren't drunk. |

Are you an American? That quote for World Nomads, which is a mob I have used on several occassions, seems very high. I typed in a year's worth of coverage using the UK and Australia as the homebase and the quote came out at around $450USD for 12 months, which is reasonable.
Time to hit google and do some research. As the poster above says, make sure it includes coverage for motorbike accidents and it is up to you to get your license. Also, theft is a real issue in Vietnam so check how much they will pay for lost items and make sure you have your receipts! |
