Avoid! Conditions at the PDI were bad enough, and now
1) Employment visa: arranged by the university; cost to employee $600-700
2) Salary paid in US dollars; $30-$35/hour (while the PDI makes $1000s)
3) Option to participate in the university’s health insurance program (i.e. pay for it yourself).
4) Accommodation, shared with another expat instructor, plus most? utilities.
5) 6 day week!
6) Bullying, self possessed, head-in-the-sand (work that one out) co-ordinator.
AUIS is run by a sneaky, self righteous bunch of right wing ultraconservatives, including SDA cultists (Don't be associated with the latter, especially in Kurdistan!). |

What ad? Did you mention one?
I did use google and found very little on either set of initials. Certainly nothing that seemed to have anything to do with your post.
If one person asks, that likely means that there are others who might have been confused. This is, after all, the "general" board.
Common courtesy suggests that you give an answer.
Which would have taken less time than being rude.

Hi, all,
After googling a bit, I found this link which BB may be referring to (and could've simply been spelled out here since not many of us know PDI denotes an EFL program):
http://auis.edu.krd/pdi-language-courses
By the way, like VS and 2buckets, I was confused; nowhere could I find an advert, or perhaps you meant the link to the university's web page (per above).
Cheers,

Yeah, the OP could have been clear in his/her post rather than making others look up the info.
AUIS PDI:

The Professional Development Institute (PDI) at AUIS supports individuals, organizations, and professional groups with courses and programs covering a wide range of subjects, including English language studies and management and business training. Source: http://auis.edu.krd/PDI-Home |
That said, on AUIS' website, the only job opening related to English is for a PhD holder to teach English degree majors. Regardless, given the OP's sour grapes about AUIS... |

Sounds no worse than a Saudi job. Everything looks the same except the pay sounds a little more attractive. Of course a prospective teacher will not be offered the maximum, no way, everybody experienced in Asia teaching will know that. If they cut you a ticket to the locality it might be worth trying as a final ESL effort for some extra cash before changing careers. |

Looking at the instructors featured and their universities-
Loma Linda University
Excelsior University
Cairn University
certainly two of these (Loma Linda and Cairn) are 'Christian' universities which might indicate something concerning the profile of teachers they are looking to recruit. |

I've been to AUIS and they have excellent facilities but I've never worked there and don't know anyone who has. |

I have a friend who worked there. He was happy enough.
I have visited and it is true that accommodation was shared but it was a very large apartment and in a modern block protected by a soldier while I was there (but only temporarily I understand as ISIS was at peak advancement at the time). It was within easy walking distance of shops, a couple of bars within hotels and the city's major park.
There were Seventh Day Adventists in some numbers but they were a minority and not imposing, at least, on my friend.
If the pay had been higher I would have been interested in a year or two. |

It's pretty common for the large apartment complexes to have armed security, even before ISIS.
It sounds like they live near Parki Azadi. I think that would be a nice location. I always assumed they lived at or near the university which I wouldn't care for. It's not really within walking distance of much. |
