Just got mine today. Yikes. I am passing my 5th year in Japan into my 6th year. Maybe that has something to do with it..

I think it has to do with your previous year's income level. If it doubled and you earned the same amount the previous year, it may be worth checking to make sure there wasn't an error.

It happened to me too.

Yes, people have told me that the rate depends on how much you made the previous year. My bill says it's around 10% of my income (because I am over 40 and have to buy nursing home insurance. If you're younger, you get a break.)

10% of one's income is very steep, don't you think? This is supposed to be "insurance" not a tax.

I checked Blue Cross traveler's insurance and the rate for 30 days in Japan (100% coverage by the way) and it was about 10,000 yen. The Japanese govt. is charging me over 3X as much. Rolling Eyes

How the national health insurance works in Japan is the more money you make, the more you pay for your health insurance.

And the more health insurance money you pay, the more Japanese senior citizens that are getting their healthcare costs paid by you.

Now doesn't that fact make you all warm and fuzzy inside? Very Happy

Not the adjectives I would have chosen. Feels a bit like, "We don't want you here, but we'll take your money. Good luck getting a Japanese national to vote otherwise!"
