I'm not sure if this question has already been asked here, but I will ask anyway because I'm getting conflicting information.

My passport is due to expire early next year and I will have to renew it before the end of my next contract, which is also with a different school.

I plan to go home in just a few weeks.

Can I renew my passport when I go home without it ruining everything (my visa, my FEC, resident's permit, etc)? Or am I pretty much locked into renewing it in China?

If it's an American passport, I believe that you can still have new pages inserted into the book. That will leave your existing, current permits untouched.

I don't think this solves the problem of a soon to expire passport though.

I've renewed my passport from within China twice now (last renewal Nov. 2013). In case you aren't aware: When you renew a passport the current RP/visa in the old passport is still valid until you get your next RP in the new passport, meaning when you travel you carry both passports for a period of time. If you renew your passport at home the same process should apply. One potential problem is at the airline check-in desk when returning to China. Seeing no valid Chinese visa in the new passport the agent could refuse a boarding pass. They may not recognize the RP in your expired passport is still valid, and despite the fact they have manuals with passenger travel requirements this situation might not be covered. Renewing the passport in China after you return or while you're at home, whichever you think is easier.

I'm British and renewed my passport last summer. Everything was fine. I just took my old passport (with the RP) to the airport and used that. The check in staff didn't blink an eye, immigration didn't blink an eye. Really surprised me. Though I think I used my new passport to book tickets, I can't remember...

New residency permit got put into the new passport. Never saw the FEC so don't know anything about that.

If you're British you have to request getting your passport back when you renew, or I think the passport office destroys it. Also, when it comes back the edges of the outside cover are cut off, as a security measure.
