Is it possible to use a picture saved in word as an avatar and if so, how can I do it?

Sure. Open the Word file and take a screenshot of the page, which will put the image on your clipboard. Then open a graphics program (Paint?) and paste the image. You can then crop and resize your image, etc. to save to use as an avatar.
