I have looked at many ads for teachers to go an work in China. Several of them ask you to send a photocopy of your passport. Is this legal?

Some of the schools only do this to check if you're "white" enough for them! Sad but apparently true. It is standard here, however.

The reasons are 2 fold
1) As suggested previously that you have the 'correct' appearance Twisted Evil
2) To get a letter of approval issued by the relevant education office for your visa. (They will also need copies of your qualifications.)

Good luck
M.

In fairness, it's probably also used to ensure that you are from where you say you're from, (although, that's probably related to the "are you white enough?" segment).
