Hi
I am just looking for some information regarding realistic employment options for myself and my wife.
By the time we leave our host country we will be in our late 40s. I have a MA in Tefl and a PGCE in English. My first degree is in English and French. I speak fluent French and Italian. I have taught Esol at universities for three years both at home and abroad and also at language schools in Korea and the UK for a further two years. For the last decade or so I have taught Esol in higher education, part-time. I have spent most of the last decade delivering and writing education programmes within the heritage sector.
My wife has a Post-Graduate diploma in TEFL and a decade or so part time in higher education. Her main job as been as a manager in the care sector.
I suppose I really want to know where a couple like ourselves should apply.
Thank you in advance |

Mexico, you could both work in higher education, earn well locally. But the Mexican peso is having a very rough year, so you couldn't really save anything or pay any debt you may have, or have much for visits home. |

In China what kind of institution do you mean? If I paid my dues in Korea or Japan for a year or so would that be an option? Are couples jobs possible there and is ageism a factor culturally there as opposed to China? |

China is huge, which logically equates to more opportunities teaching adults. Head to the China forum for specifics relative to your situation.
For Japan, take a look at: Question about university hires... as well as post your own questions on that forum.
For Korea, you'd have to head to the following forum to ask about ageism, salaries, university opportunities, etc.: http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/. It requires separate registration.
Also check out higheredjobs.com and TESOL.org's career center. |

When I started researching China as a place to head to I was reminded of what a VAST country it is and how little most of us know of it ! |

Have you tried the British Council? They are more flexible with regard to qualifications these days. I think they used to be sticklers for what they call TEFL-Q which is basically Cambridge CELTA and DELTA or Trinity Cert and Dip Tesol. Now, they will consider MAs etc without TEFL-Q.
Brunei? Saudi? University sector in Malaysia? |
