I don't know how to get this one done, any thoughts would be appreciated.
I've been in China for 3 years, resident permit and all. More recently though I was told I needed to get my some of my documents 'stamped' by the Chinese Embassy located in the states. I can probably do this for most of the documents, I hope at least. However there is one that I am worried about- I have a CELTA issued from a school that was located in Ecuador.... How do I get this one in an acceptable condition for the Embassy to approve it? I mean, isn't there some notarization expected, or goverment verification of document expected before the Embassy will stamp it? How do I do that while in the US? |

In regard to your CELTA, see Cambridge English and scroll down to "Applying for a certifying statement."
For your degree, contact the registrar at your university; they should be able to get most of the process done for you. Besides, most state Secretaries of State won't authenticate a uni diploma unless it bears the registrar's notarized affidavit. That's where you should start. |

Well, that is a start but the mystery lies with how to go about getting the proper authentication on the CELTA, or certificate statement, whereby the Chinese Embassy will accept it...Will my Secretary of State notarize a CELTA something coming from the UK? And, on a similiar but less complicated note, my Uni degree is from an out of state establishment...Does the Secretary of State from where that university is located need to authenticate the degree, or can I get my home state's folks to do it? |

Cambridge's verification is enough; no need to send your cert to the US Authentication Office.
In regard to your university diploma, the State Notary will only authenticate the signature and seal of notaries public in that same state. (I used to be a notary.) For example, if your university is in Colorado, your diploma is then both notarized and authenticated in Colorado before heading to the fed level.
Your registrar's office can probably facilitate the process through the State's Notary end. My university did.

Englishpal, I believe, unless I'm going nutty, that only the Criminal Check and Degree need to be authorized for the visa process. The CELTA/TEFL cert does not. |

That's probably so. However, once the CELTA has been verified, it's set for teaching jobs elsewhere in the world that do require it. In other words, better to get your documents verified now than scramble to get it done later and while outside your home country. |

Very helpful information, thank you.
Marriage records and birth certificates are verified by the State or county? |

See Authentication Certificate Requirements and scroll down to State and Local. |

Thanks for the link, but it just raises more questions....That link includes information about getting state and local documents certified at the federal level......Are you suggesting that documents, including the marriage license and birth certificates, must be authenticated at both the state and federal level? I thought that the Chinese Embassy required the Secretary of State's authentication. Please clarify. |

That I don't know since I'm neither married nor have children, which is apparently your situation. Either you or a friend/family member can call the US Office of Authentications at 202-485-8000, or you could email several of the umpteen document authentication agencies listed on the Net. Otherwise, wait for someone on this forum to respond with their experience about marriage and spouse/dependent documents. |

You probably don't need to get it verified, but if you do, don't bother. Just take a cheap TESOL course in China that the government recognizes. |

The school I graduated from said they could not notarize the actual diploma but are sending a verification letter of my diploma that has been notarized by them. Is that normal? |

Normal for which state? Each one is different. A verification letter is probably fine as long as it bears the registrar's original signature and the statement has been notarized.
Anyway, go on your state's Secretary of State website and see what's required for degree authentication. Email them if you're still unsure. |

I meant is it normal for a school to not notarize an actual diploma but rather instead to provide a verification letter of degree that they have notarized. The school is in N. Carolina and once I receive the documents will mail off to the Sec of State. |
