The reduced revenue from oil has hurt a lot of programs in the US, including DLI, who had become dependent on the Sowdy money and students that were once flowing. Now that the Sowdy scholarship is khalas....the number of Sowdy students has all but stopped.
DLI, at one point was close to 70 percent Sowdy. Now the number of students at DLI has returned to what it was before the Sowdy influx. What does this mean for all of those instructors who were hired to accommodate the growing student body?
Currently, there are more instructors on the payroll than there are students.
What does this mean for the ESL instructors at DLI? I predict massive reduction in force soon.

Hello,

A former colleague who teaches at DLI (overseas and stateside) confirmed a while ago that there was an indefinite hiring freeze (I think back in March) but didn't give particulars. I'll keep you posted if I hear any updates from him.

At usajobs.gov where DLI posts openings, yesterday I noticed many teaching positions for Arabic, Chinese and Spanish speakers but none for ESL, but again, that was yesterday.

PS

Sorry, should be peri_patetic soul said...I read on the DLI website that approx. 95% of civilian workers' positions were being cut. Can you give us the link?
