I'm moving to Vietnam in November to teach English. I currently have a rather old phone(IPhone 5) which works fine but I really want to replace now as it's 3 years old. My options are buy a new phone in the UK, take that with me to Vietnam and get a Vietnamese SIM or use my current phone for the next 4 months and get a new phone out in Vietnam. I'm leaning towards the second option as I'm going to have to have a Vietnamese number whilst I am out there anyway, but would that phone be any good to me once I left Vietnam in a year or two?

Has anybody had any experience with anything like this or any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Man, when the iPhone 5 is considered "a rather old phone." Smile

There are plenty of used phone markets in Vietnam and they are unlocked. If you want a cheaper brand, I quite like the Korean VEGA or SKY, which are almost equivalent to fancier Samsungs. That said, I think you would probably find cheaper prices (not to mention phones that weren't probably stolen) in UK as electronic goods are taxed in Vietnam.

More important is whether your iPhone is unlocked or not. If it is, you can just pop in a SIM card and use it. If not, you will need to unlock it.

The phones you buy in Vietnam are almost always unlocked so you can also them elsewhere - I had my VN-bought phone and used it without issue in other countries.
