Hi,
I've lived in both Japan and China and each of those places has quirks about renting property.
How about Europe? What are the major things to be aware of? In particular, given typical employment contracts run from September to June, how do you deal with that, assuming most rental contracts are for one year? |

If your contract isn't for a full year:
1) rent for a year with the option to find summer work, or
2) rent month-to-month.
The latter choice will be more expensive. But should you desire the freedom of mobility, then it might not be too bad. Also, you generally won't have to be concerned with large move-in fees, and most places will be fully furnished.
If you decide to formally lease a place, then it gets a bit more complicated. You have to show sufficient income, make a deposit of 1 or 2 months rent, and maybe even pay an agent fee. As would be expected, income requirements are going to be roughly 3x the rent. Personally, if your job seems any bit shakey, I would just go with option 2. There are likely to be plenty of short-term rentals, especially in tourist areas. Also, in my experience, short-term lessors tend to speak decent English. |
