Got a mail from one Mr Hoang Nguyen (lovely generic name) asking to meet me in Hanoi (I am not as yet in Vietnam) thus:
Are you currently in Hanoi? If you are not in Hanoi, could we arrange a skype talk for further details. I am available from 9-11AM and from 3-9PM from Monday to Sunday Hanoi time zone. My skype ID is hoangnd9. Please add my skype and let me know which time and date will be suitable for you to talk with me on skype.
If you are in Hanoi now, could you arrange to come to my house at 9AM tomorrow morning so we can discuss more about the position. My house is near My Dinh National Stadium. So I will wait for you at 9AM at the gate of My Dinh National Stadium on Le Duc Tho street, My Dinh, Nam Tu Liem. Please follow the following google map link

Well, he seems to be a recruiter and an amateur one at that.
Save your time for HR managers, DOS's, head teachers, etc. who work at actual schools. Those are the people you want to be talking with. Logically, this guy represents the schools that are incapable of finding teachers on their own, for whatever reason.
Or, you could chat with him and let us know how it goes, sort of like an investigative reporter. |

Well we were supposed to have a skype talk on Thursday but he seemed incapable of fixing a definite time for it, so it never happened. So there ya go. |

Okay so I finally talked to the dude on skype and he was actually kinda sweet. However the deal sucks- no apartment, no flights and only business visa. Two campuses of the uni and they shuttle you from the city to the new campus in the boonies. $20 an hour. So I shan't be pursuing that one... |

Hmmmn.
Who gets flights paid - pretty rare in Vietnam.
Apartment? Again you organize that yourself here and I for one prefer it.
20 USD an hour is pretty good. You can get better but not usually right off the bat.
Work Permits are rarely provided even by the top tier schools. If they stump up for a business visa that is actually more than most do.
Being stuck out in the middle of nowhere and having to shuttle between 2 locations is not for everyone and I would probably turn down a job over that.
But flights/apartment/visa/WP are not deal breakers here. Just so you know. |
