Is there such a thing as a free tesol or esl course that will give me a certificate upon completion?
If not, which establishment offers the course in Toronto? Rolling Eyes

Yes. There is a firm called 'Have your free lunch and eat it too' that also gives out free TEFL courses on the streets of inner London, usually in winter along with cups of tea, including certificates for those that successfully complete the course.

Also, I think Oxfam offer free TEFL courses as, after all, teaching others to teach English (for free) is a large part of their work when viewed on a global scale.

You might want to try your local second hand shop as free TEFL certificates can often be had there, too!

There is no need to be rude about it! Evil or Very Mad

It was just a question because I don't know.
I'm new to all this and a simple and respectful "no" would have been sufficient.

I also asked where in Toronto I could study for a tesol certificate (even if it wasn't free). You could have been helpful and tried to answer that question instead of just running your mouth...

If it was free, it wouldn't be worth very much would it?
Who would teach the course? A teacher trainer would volunteer a month of their time to teach a course?

You probably aren't interested in a CELTA since it is about $2500. I think LSC or ISC teaches it in Toronto. IMO it is worth the money.

check out these guys...

www.onlinetefl.com

They seem to offer a decent online program and they are running a 20% discount if you use the link on the front page of esl cafe. I have researched the online options for a while and these guys get my vote.

At English Unlimited online you can take a correspondance course that sets you up with a reputable TEFL, achieved at your own pace, for around $600. You might check that out.

No, there are no free ones. But if you want to just learn about it, go to the linguistics section of the library at UofT or maybe Humber College. The bookstores would be a better place to begion, libraries always have really old books. In fact, doing this and talking with someone in the departments about ESL would be a good idea anyway . Just doing this would give you more information than a lot of the quick 40hour certificates available for about half the price of a full year at college or university.

What do you want the certificate for? Do you want to teach in Ontario? Or do you want to teach overseas? For Ontario, you need to get certified with TESL Ontario (you do need a degree for certification as well, and you need a degree to work legally in most countries).

Here's a list of courses you can take to doso:
http://www.teslontario.org/cert/institutions.html

UofT offers a TESL certificate through Woodsworth. Go to the bookstore and look through the books.

Or, if you're sure that 1. You do not want to teach ESL in Ontario and 2. You do not want to put in the time required of these programmes (they're a full time year at a university or college, and require a degree to enter, or sometimes you can do them at the same time as studying for a degree) , then you can get a CELTA or something private like that (but you should probably do a search in the teacher training forum for any private company before paying hundreds or thousands for a certificate that may not have very much information at all). But if you already have a degree, then you can come to Asia without anymore training than that, and for Europe, you almost always need an EU country's passport.
