Hi!
I was just wondering if anyone knew if it was normal to be offered a job without an interview. I also havnt been answered about the level of my potential students (though not for lack of trying).
I've been offered 3800, housing, and partial air but need to take care of my own visa. Is this normal (in chengdu) for a newbie with no degree? I know its not a lot... but is it enough I wonder...
Thanks a lot for any help! |

...hmmmm, I would be hesitant about jumping into PRC with this kind of deal. I was once living in Asia and got a job in Germany on the strength of a phone interview and several emails going back and forth for a couple of weeks. So it does happen!
In a nutshell: Don't go there, dude. Get the best deal you can and THEN go to PRC. A professional place will take care of your visa..flights..etc.
Aim yourself towards Beijing or Shanghai where there are a lot of good openings.
Hunt around and don't sell yourself out for a rotten deal... take your time and don't be rushed...
Good luck! With a reasonable amount of research you should be able to earn about 9000RMB a month in Shanghai or Beijing... |

I would avoid the school you are mentioning.....for starters. You said you don't have a degree, what about TESOL, CELTA, TEFL etc?
If they are considering hiring without any kind of interview (telephone etc) and they are telling you you have to get your own visa and so on, there is a good chance they that may not be a legal school or they may not have permit to hire foreigners....the possibilities are endless. Out of curiousity, how many classes/hours are they wanting out of you per week? |

Whilst anyone white, alive, and speaking some variant of English can get a job here, you're in the "remnants" rack of applicants. You need at least a degree to work in any legitimate school. Look more widely, and take the best on offer: not this one, I'd suggest. 4000, housing, airfare, visa would be the best to hope for. |

They have answered in the same noncommittal manner to dozens of others, and maybe ten percent of them will arrive there; if they have one job and 20 applicants arrive on the same day, then the guy with blonde hair and blue eyes gets the job. |

Thanks everyone for your help! I really appretiate it! Although the job sounds good to me its great to hear form ppl who know what they are talking about! I think I might just take your suggestions and try to find another job. Just for the record though.. I do have a tesl cert, and they are helping with the visa but I have to pay for it and do all that jazz and whatnot here.
Thanks again! |
