Hello everyone,

I am one of the teachers who thought to wait it out with ICEAT in hopes that we'd be offered something, even if it would have been a reasonably lower salary, to get us through the year. After dismissing all ICEAT teachers without an English degree or 5 years at KSU (I have related MA thankfully so I'm still in), it seems clear to me that their need for teachers will not drive them to give said teachers something reasonable, which is what I was banking on.

After not being paid for all of September, they are offering us start soon at the abysmal rate of 13,000 full package, a full 5,000 reduction for MA holders. I tried to negotiate with ICEAT but they claim they cannot go up at all since they are subcontracting to SBC, which is offering quite low numbers to begin with.

I am wondering what my options are at this point for working at KSU. For many complicated personal reasons, I really have no practical choice but to work at KSU this year. Is there anything anyone knows I can do at this point besides take this joke of a salary?

In addition to salaries dropping and a tightening economy, you're dealing with two for-profit companies --- ICEAT and SBC --- that are primarily concerned about making money on their end and not on yours. This is another disadvantage to working for middlemen. Anyway, since you say you have no choice but to work at KSU, then you'll have to suck it up and accept their offer.

If you have no choice, then you have no choice.

Do you really have no choice?

KSU is an absolute mess at the moment. It seems like all the Riyadh universities are desperately trying hire teachers (certainly that is true for female teachers). There are other people hiring if you are interested.

Ask for a final exit visa. You may find a new offer arrives in your email box a few days later.

I must be honest, despite having worked at KSU in the past, it is the last place I would want to be this semester.

Added to which, ICEAT and EdEx have really screwed their teachers over. People have been waiting two months or more for end of service benefits, people that came back for the new semester were not paid in full, most don't have new contracts yet. The list goes on.....

It is practically not feasible for me to work anywhere but KSU at this point, but I am not going into it because it involves family issues. Anyways, my question was more about if anyone has been able to get negotiate salary or if they is still a way to transfer to Al-Hussan.

So, basically, and I understand its probably not likely, but I was wondering if there is still a way to work at KSU with a similar salary to previous years.

Then the answer is no.

Everyone I know who was able to transfer or subcontract has done so at a lower salary.

Just don't sell yourself cheap. I know more than ten iceat teachers who left with their end of service money, in August. Most of them told me that iceat was buying time.
Hope all will be ok.
I heard they got subcontracts in Dammam as well!

Bad enough that so many employers in KSA (and Oman) use greedy contractors to hire their teachers... but now they are using SUB-contractors to suck off even more of the teachers' pay and benefits.

What a disgraceful slave system... no wonder Saudi Arabia is in such dire financial condition.

ICEAT may get a call back from KSU soon.

Teachers are doing four classes a day instead of the usual two. Al Hussan is basically the only company on campus. EdEx have provided less than 10 staff so far.

All true, and to make matters worse the contractors are teaming up with 'like-minded' recruiters in the abysmal UK recruitment industry.

I tried to avoid contractors where I could. Once - 1990-1991 - I was truly desperate and took a teaching job through Adnan Kazelly with Petromin/Samarec. It always galled me that he was getting the same as I was ! "One for me and one for you". There were 12 or 15 of us. Work out the maths for yourselves !

I did my year with him. While there I had talks with an employer about direct hire. We did a deal but Kazelli refused me an NOC/LONO. So I left after my year with him.

It took me a long time to get back to KSA but I did eventually as a direct hire - first with the airline and then with KFUPM.

We all lived happily ever after..

Of course the crisis now has created an entitle new situation.

Some of the ICEAT staff were back on campus today, I heard.

They were welcomed with open arms as teachers are already feeling overworked.

Arrive at 7.10 and teaching at 11.20. Not much time to prep for classes. But that doesn't matter too much since management has taken a hit on numbers as well so there won't be much in the way of admin checking classrooms or the PD dept doing observations.

That is KSU speak for 'professional development department'.

It has been called a few other things over the years but I think you might be able to make Police Department stick. It's very political too.

Yes, it is just like police department. I was there when they were checking classes to if teachers are teaching or not.
Another thing I just talked to one of my friends he is working for iceat, he's been transferred to Dammam, 2K less than his last year's salary. He is not happy and looking for another job or he'll sail for old Blighty in December.
