I have a contract starting soon in Oman, teaching english in an oil field and living on site long term. I dont know the exact location yet.

It will be my first time and i was interested in other peoples experiences of life on oil fields? Especially about living conditions.

Accommodation and food are provided free, but I am wondering what to expect from them. Also are there many services available, eg laundry machines, post, decent internet?

I have plenty of studying to do and enjoy keeping fit (hopefully there are gyms or somewhere you can exercise?), so luckily boredom won't be an issue. But I have no idea what to expect, google doesnt show much. Can anyone share their experiences?

I've lived in oil fields for years.

Here's my advice:

1. Be a team player
2. Understand people get cabin fever and forget it if someone has a bad day
3. Have a routine
4. Make sure you do some sort of activity ie walking, gym, swimming (if there's a pool)
5. Try not to eat too much. Sounds dumb but many put on weight
6. Don't count the first week or the last week when you're counting days
7. Think of the things you can't live without and take them
8. Take a copy of Murphy and Oil and Gas 1 (Oxford for careers)

Send me a pm...I think I might know someone where you are going. I heard it sin't paid that well.
