Merriam Webster Dictionary: slave labor is "labor that is inadequately rewarded"

Hey guys. In case anyone sees an advertisement to work for DaDaAbc for $20 an hour, don't bother. Great platform and the employees I spoke with were great but there is a huge problem with their contract.

If you make 1 wrong move you are at risk of losing LOTS of money. In the contract you will see all of the things that can cost you 240 RMB per hour (about $36/hour) or even 20% of your ENTIRE MONTH'S SALARY if you are caught eating any food. Wow. Basically most of the contract is about all of the ways they can deduct HUGE amounts of pay for infractions that are even very minor. I don't know if this is standard practice for working in China but I'm assuming $20+/hr advertisements is their way to attract teachers and then hope teachers will still sign up despite the very high likelihood you will have a few deductions every month and you'll only end up earning $12-$15 an hour or losing your month's salary if you have to quit on short notice. I'm not a lawyer but I'm positive this contract wouldn't hold up in most courts in Western countries.

Here is a link to their contract:

I was skeptical from the start but I had spare time to go through the interview process and get my hands on the contract. They didn't offer to let me see it until after 3 or 4 steps into the process (2-3 weeks of various meetings and practice classes). Don't waste your time with them.

I work for them and have never been fined.

My contract mentions no such things about fines.

I make more than $20 an hour.

The students are great and nothing needs to be done in preperation. I find overall I make more here per hour than if I worked at a brick and mortar place because I am already at home anda don't spend 1 hour commuiting to work.

I make about $1500 a month which is great. In the summer I was making almost $3000 a month with their summer schedule. I enjoyed it.

I am planning on resigning [which comes with a 20 RMB an hour increase in pay] and a months signing on bonus again. Not bad at all to get another $1500 in your bank after a years service online.

The Chinese staff are great. If the student fails to turn up you sit and watch youtube videos and still get your pay. They also pay you if you do not have classes schedule, you get 1/2 your salary hourly [$12] to sit in front of a PC and do nothing unless otherwise told.

If the contract (which I attached a link to, see it for yourself) didn't have the fines I would have likely joined because the classes required no preparation like you mentioned. But I have other online sources for pay and I don't need to ask for permission weeks in advance to take vacation or send a doctors note if im sick, or ask for permission to work in another location if I'm travelling, and more and more and more requirements (all requirements I listed were stated in the contract sent to me). Also, since I don't live in China, the transfer fees and currency exchange fees were going to decline the pay to a point that just didn't make sense for me. My other sources take the hit on fees and I can raise my rate at anytime if I have a huge demand (I typically do every 3 months nowadays), I don't need to wait 6 months to a year. Anyway, it appeared to be a solid platform but that contract was such a huge turd in the punchbowl it was actually offensive and laugh out loud funny at the same time. I wish I had got into the company when they weren't trying to make new teachers agree to possible slave labor.
