Is this legal in China?
What are the requirements? I simply wish to work as a private tutor or freelancer.
Any suggestions are appreciated. [/b] |

As I understand it, freelance tutoring in mainland China is not legal under a Z visa. It is only legal with a Permanent Residence D visa which is extremely rare / difficult to get.
Many people tutor privately under Z visas regardless, just be aware of the risks if you also want to do so.
Now Hong Kong (where I work) is another matter. Here there are a few different paths you can take to become a legal freelance tutor. |

I'm not concerned about the PR D visa as I have lived, worked , studied in China and I'm married to a local girl.
I just need some pointers to find some students when I am eligible for to work legally. |

Legality issues aside, building up your private student base is a matter of establishing your reputation and networking. Depending on how open / obvious you want to be about operating as a private tutor, you can either advertise online, distribute leaflets, talk to people or generally let it be known that you are willing to tutor students privately.
I've found that targeted ads are the most effective in initially building up your student base. Think carefully about the layout and content of your ads. Highlight your experience, qualifications, any special programs you can offer etc etc. Make sure to include some pricing information as well. If you don't want to specify your full price range, just say hourly lessons from XXX. You might also want to think about where to post these ads. I'm continually surprised at how many bad ads there are for tutors.
Once you have achieved a 'critical mass' of students then word-of-mouth referrals will take over as your main source of new students. |

If you have lived and worked in China for some time....and have marital status to remain here independently....why are you asking on this discussion forum about the 'legality' of working freelance? |
