I know there is public transport from RAK to Dubai etc., but is there any local public transport in RAK or are the only options getting a car or using a taxi?

There is no public transport system in RAK. If you take a taxi, make sure the driver speaks sufficient English or you may pay for a circuitous route to your destination. It may also be difficult to find a taxi during Friday call to prayer and you don't want to be standing out in the merciless desert heat.
The best bet is to ask colleagues to recommend a reliable driver whom you can depend on for a reasonable fee.

Car rentals can be pricey so shop around if you choose this option. Good luck.
