Looking at uni jobs in KSA and some of the ads state an age limit of 58. Is that for real?
Thanks.

It's for real in terms of obtaining an employment visa. Although 60 is the retirement age in KSA, the cut-off age for recruitment tends to be 58 with some ads stating even lower ages.
On a related note, check out getting around age limit w/ business visa. Working via a business or work visit visa is not without issues.

Age limit? For real? The only thing that is real is that you have a pulse....regardless of age I have seen teachers well into their 60's teaching EFL in the desert sands...mostly on a work visit visa! |

There are other threads where this is discussed at length. Retirement is at 60 unless your employer can argue a special case. 60 years in the Hegira Calendar is 58 and a bit in the Gregorian.
Private sector employers may take you on later - and may expect you to work semi-legally on a business visa.
the Ministries in Riyadh - Labour, Interior and Higher Education work in concert to enforce the age limit which is being taken more seriously these days.
Saudi rules - the place is not run for the benefit of foreign teachers. |

Although with a military contract, first with a Saudi subcontractor and then an American one (DynCorp Int'l), I got the Qassim job at 59 in 2009 and retired at 65 in 2015. Others were a year or two older than I and worked until this year when they also retired. The rule with the Saudi Army and whatever contractor hired us was that we had to be under 60 to be hired, but once aboard could stay pretty much indefinitely assuming they liked us. There were no forced retirements, and any sackings were not age-related. |
