I am currently working in here in China, and will need to find a new position soon. Can anyone tell me what the situation is with visa? Can my visa/residence permit be transferred to another employer in the same city?

Your question is a little vague and has too many variables to give a definitive answer.

Assuming you have completed your contract and are able to get your release letter, reference letter and foreign experts cancellation notice (issued from the provincial HQ where you are which entails your current employer visiting them in person and turning in your old book) it should be relatively straightforward. You need to give these documents to your new school, they will then have to apply for you a new foreign experts book as your old one is tied to your former school and employer.

They will also have to apply for a new residents permit for you even though it is the same city, both of these are linked together. Your current one will be voided and a new one issued in line with the dates of your new contract.

If they are dragging their heals or you have some other contractual obligations to fill and are leaving for other reasons it will not be plain sailing, whether it be the same city, province or elsewhere.

Are you asking about how to renew a visa while you are currently living in China? If you do not want to leave Asia, you will need to apply for a new visa in either Taiwan or Hong Kong. You can not get a Chinese visa in Mainland China.

As I said in my reply there are too many variables to give a definitive answer.

I based my reply based on the assumption that the OP already has a z visa and resident permit not another kind of visa, if it is the latter then yes the OP will have to leave China and reapply for a new visa, be this in Hong Kong (if allowed) or go back to his/her own country and start again.

If already in possession of a resident permit there should be no reason to have to exit China if you are able to get all the required release documents from your existing employer and your new school can process the transfer in a timely manner.

Yes, your residence permit can be transferred to your new school, even if it is NOT in the same city.

Your visa got you into China. Once you arrived, it became void.

So, if I can get the release letter, FEC cancellation etc., does anyone know how long it takes for the transfer, approximately?
