You don't need to show a return ticket when traveling to Hong Kong where Americans / Brits / Aussies and others get a no-cost 90 day visa on arrival . If you'd flown to Hong Kong and then traveled to Guangzhou by bus (2 hour trip), you also wouldn't have had to show a return ticket or hotel booking at the Hong Kong - Chinas border crossing.

Also, flying into Guangzhou (and applying for a Chinese tourist visa in the States), you need to show a confirmed flight out of China but it doesn't have to be a return flight to your home country, You could have done it with a Guangzhou to Bangkok ticket which costs $105.00 with Air Asia.

OP, thanks for the post. On the Residence Permit sticker in your passport, on the lower right it reads "Purpose of Residence" with a space to state the reason, probably in Chinese characters. If you have permission to work in China, it should be marked: 工作 . Is yours filled in that way?
