Today I was told by a coworker that there is a new law that the age limit has been lowered to 60 ( from 65)- and that the Saudi Embassy will not issue work visas to anyone at/ over 60.

Is this confirmed and is there a new law like that? What do you know?

Anecdotes are welcome.

Let's hope that the trade between the US and Saudi Arabia really starts drying up. Very Happy Of course Saudi Arabia can mess with people by refusing to give employment visas to those 60 and above, but all the same I would like to see the trade dry up of course along with their oil.

Back to the topic: can anyone confirm this law?

Any anecdotes about people over 60 working/getting Iqamas lately?

You might ask your colleague for the source of that info. My understanding is that the established retirement age is still 60 (for males).

Per the Saudi labor law:
Quote:
Chapter Three: Termination of Work Contract
Article (74):
A work contract shall terminate in the following cases:

(4) The worker attains the age of retirement, which is sixty years for males and fifty five years for females, unless the two parties agree upon continuing work after this age. The retirement age may be reduced in cases of early retirement as provided for in the work organization regulation. If it is a fixed-term work contract which extends beyond the retirement age, it shall terminate at the end of its term.

That shouldn't be confused with the proposed increase in retirement age per the Civil Service Retirement Law, which went before the Shoura Council for a vote in 2016.

Further, the Ministry of Labor Guidebook for Expatriates states:
Quote:
Part six: termination of work contract:

1- A work contract shall terminate in the following cases:
The worker attains the age of retirement, which is sixty years for males and fifty five years for females, unless the two parties agree upon continuing work after this age. The retirement age may be reduced in cases of early retirement as provided for in the work organization regulation. If it is a fixed term work contract which extends beyond the retirement age, it shall terminate at the end of its term.

There's no law protecting 60-year-old expats with current legal residence and employment status from being terminated at the end of their contract. It seems to be at the employer's discretion likely based on hiring need (e.g., specialization, high enrollment, hardship location, etc.). Plus, if you read the latest TEFL job ads, you'll see that some indicate applicants be under a specific age --- usually between 56 and 58. Other postings may not state a cut-off age for recruitment, but that doesn't mean recruiters/employers don't follow an established age limit for employment/work visa purposes.

Interestingly, 60 years based on the Hijri/Islamic calendar is roughly equal to 58 per the Gregorian calendar.

It has been 60 for a long time. (58 years and 4 months if the Hegira Calendar is used) The only exception I know of is KFUPM. That was the reason I sidestepped from Saudi Arabian Airlines to the university in Dhahran in 2003.

Can a person who is over 60 expect to be able to land a job in KSA? OK, so Masters in TESOL with 20 years of experience in the Gulf, no trailing spouse or children. Good references from previous employers.

It's doubtful but definitely apply to find out.

PERHAPS with one of the rather undesirable contractors.. The trick is to get in there BEFORE 60, but even then the tendency is to send people home when they reach that magic number 60.

The dodgy contractors welcome the over 60s with open arms, if they think they can make money out of them.

And I have seen no evidence of the contractors' clients being unhappy about over 60s teaching at their colleges/training centers, so there is
more than hope to keep the over 60s motivated.

One of my early memories at KFUPM is when I observed a teacher from one of the contractors on his way to work. He collapsed and died on his way . KFUPM no longer uses contractors.
