Currently I'm on a Z visa in China but plan to leave to go to another employer with limited notice. As I don't think my current employer will give me the letter of release and is highly unlikely to pay me for this month if I tell them I'm just going to leave. My visa has no exit permits and so will be cancelled on exit. I believe it is very easy to get the F (business) visa in HK, one of my colleagues has one. How possible it is to work on one of these in China. Also will I have to surrender my green book on leaving in China or do I keep that. Part of the problem is according to my visa it expired some time in May however my green book covers me until sometime next April. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Well, mate, you are trying to be dirtier than the Chinese. A business visa is a business visa, it doesn't entitle you to work legally anywhere in China, contrary to common practice.
If you abscond from your current employer you lose your airfare anyway. What reason might you have for quitting in such a haste?
Your permits expire too when you quit your job. They are not transferable to your new situation unless your former employer agrees. |

From what I can gather, although it may not be strictly legal a lot of people are doing it.
As for why I am leaving well I cannot face my current situation any longer and have been offered something much better. |

Beware of THE MUCH BETTER offer in China because sometimes it comes from a relative or friend of the current boss since the current boss wants the foreigner out without having to give end of contract benefits.
So the foreigner takes THE MUCH BETTER offer only to find out that it isn't much better at all, or that it dries up within a week. Then the first boss is free of the foreigner (doesn't have to pay flight, etc.). But the foreigner ends up in a document tangle (no letter of release, no valid work papers, no income, no housing), the next boss can't get the foreigner's papers processed at the Public Security Bureau, Education Department, Labour Department, etc., without an employment reference letter from the last boss, etc.). |
