I have heard the average hourly teaching rate is 100-250RMB. Any truth in this??

Such a huge span - yes, this is not wrong!

But then again, you will have to do the commuting. Your students often come late. You will have to wait, and wait, and then, wait some more...
If your shift is split, then you lose a lot of potentially productive time, waiting. Which cuts your income down in size. Considerably!

hourly? is this normal? on all the job post they state monthly salaries.

Roger's right, those commutes are tough, but the split shifts will especially eat into the hourly rate. A few things to consider when arranging work:

- minimize, or else don't accept the split shifts.
- arrange the hours compactly, that is most teaching in a set block of time (mornings, afternoons, evenings)
- map out commutes and become road-savvy. A good knowledge of the road and bus system can cut down time considerably. As well, you can have a network of options instead of relying on the same route.

If you combine the above, you can smoothly work in a side job.
