Hello,

I wondered if anyone has any advice for teaching one to one lessons, for 2 hours at a time? I have a few private students, both teens and adults, and usually only have 2 pages of a textbook to work with. That time can really drag.

I'm a new teacher and finding it difficult to apply CELTA methods (45 minute classes to groups of at between 8-12 students)to the reality.

Make a lesson plan for 2 hours.
Supplement as needed if the book you have is inadequate.
Work your plan.

You should be focused on speaking practice with individual private students, so you need to give them something to talk about. There are tons of topic sheets on the internet that you can print out and copy.

Another simple idea is to have a folder with a lot of pictures cut from magazines and newspapers. Scenes with people doing something are the best, but pictures of objects and landscapes can also be used.

After they have talked about the picture, they can go on to write a paragraph or two about it.

2 hours can be tricky to manage for 1-1s. Do your students have any specific learning goals? Some common goals for my own adult students are: IELTS prep, interview prep, corporate presentation prep.

BTW - what's the going rate for 1-1's in Thailand now?
