One of the things I miss now that I have retired and left the Middle East. When in KSA I could afford to get shirts made-to-measure by a tailor downtown. Cost of doing this in Post-modern Britain is prohibitive. Ditto for trousers. |

In Khobar I used "Modern Tailors" There are lots of places. Just head downtown. If in doubt as an Indian taxi driver. |

Exactly what he meant. Reflect too on the fact that a shirt tailor made in Jermyn Street London will cost you £100 or more ! |

In Cairo that would be a real bargain. |

US$5.50 at today's exchange versus about $120 of the pound sterling. LOL Very tough times for the Egyptians.
I too miss the tailors of the Gulf. A skirt or blouse was usually $10 plus fabric and always fit properly.

AKA the Gulf (or Al Khaleej, in Arabic), as in those member states that make up the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It's also a region where one can find talented tailors. |

The name depends what side of it you are sitting on. It would be unwise if on the southern shores to describe it as "Persian". I am reminded that when looking at the English Channel you should call it "La Manche" if seen from the shore of the Republique Francaise !
Ditto it is now undiplomatic to describe the North Sea as "The German Ocean" ! |

It will always be the Persian Gulf for me. When you look at what great leaders like Cyrus, Darius, and Xerses achieved in pre Islamic times, when the Arabs were counting camels in the desert, how can it be anything other...... |

Bud? You are obviously new here... LOL
I see that you are in the far reaches of Asia and apparently know nothing about teaching in this part of the world. If the people who pay your salary call it the Arabian Gulf... and others who don't live or work there wish to call it the Persian Gulf... intelligent people use a little common sense and call it "The Gulf."
Who give a squat what the UN calls it...

Except in this case, there is only one legal name and that is the Persian Gulf. Even Arab books and maps from centuries ago describe this body of water as "Khalij al-fars". This fake name was created in the heat of Pan-Arabism by Nasser the then president of Egypt and has never been accepted by the U.N. In fact, these Arab nations have been told on numerous occasions to refrain from using such a fake name.
Bottom line is: this rather stems from Arabs' anti-Persian sentiments than anything else. |

I had no experience with tailors in the KSA, but I do remember having my dry cleaning done there for about $5. When I got home, I was shocked to receive a bill of $45. |
