I'm a complete newbie who's been reading everyone's posts for quite awhile, and now I'm ready to post a few things myself. i'm trying not to duplicate, but I apologize if I do by accident. There are a lot of messages out there...
So far I haven't been able to find any comments about the Zacatecas area.
What do people think about the town and possibilities of teaching English there? The much-reviled Lonely Planet says that Zacatecas has beautiful colonial architecture and university culture without a lot of tourists or expatriates (good for me because I want to learn Spanish and something about the culture). That sounds great to me, and I'm thinking about teaching there.
I wonder how hot it is if it's in the desert, but on the other hand dry heat is much better than humid heat in my book.
What do people know about the town and surrounding area?
And, if you've got the time, how would Zac. compare with SLP, Morelia and Guanajuato?
Thank you very much for your advice! I'm constantly impressed at how much energy the veterans spend advising newbies like me. I appreciate it!!

I have only visited Zacatecas, but it is DRRRYYYY. Really dry! I was there in December, and it was dry dry dry (and cold too!)...
Get the idea?
Although it is a lovely place, has some of the best art galleries I've been to, a fabulous nightlife, great gorditas, excellent coffee and a fairly affluent youth population.
I have also only visited Guanajuato, but that seemed less dry, but had a similar vibe about it.
Sorry I don't have any work type information for you..

I was in Zacatecas for a week back in '98 and liked it a lot. I agree, it does have somewhat the same vibe as Guanajuato. I don't know anything about the availability of work there. But as a place to spend some time, I was impressed. The cobble stone streets that go up into the hilly residential areas just off the main street were really great for walking. The colonial buildings in the town center were spectacular-especially the cathedral. In many ways, it reminded me of Guanajuato. But with fewer tourists. (Not that Guanajuato is overrun with them).
I don't normally like desert climates. But I was in Zacatecas in February. The day time high temperature was about 68 and the overnight low was surprisingly cold- right around the freezing mark. it felt good. I was amazed at how fast the temperature rose at sunrise and fell at sunset. Really dramatic. Kind of like in Toluca. I remember the sky being a very dark blue and super-clear. I guess from the 8,000 ft. altitude.
I especially enjoyed the teleferico. Really a great view of the city.
Good luck wherever you go. |
