Got an offer to teach history at the Shanghai Foreign Language School affiliated to Shanghai Normal University and I need some information about the school. All I've found so far is it's out near Pundong Airport
Salary is 18k/month before tax for 10 months, I know Shanghai is expensive to live in can I live decently?
Housing allowance is 2000 rmb/month, again I know Shanghai's housing prices are high but school has said 90 sq meter places can be found for like 2500 rmb/month
got another offer from a school SE of Shenzhen, NE of Hong Kong on a beach teaching ESL (I taught ESL at the univ level for 15 years) at an international school 19k/month after tax with housing paid for
debating taking an easy well paying ESL job vs a lesser paying history job that may get me some experience to teach at the international school level. Ive spent this past semester teaching US History in Chongqing, really don't like the city or the school, it was only a 1 semester contract long story
BTW I have an MA in history and a social studies teaching cert

A few things leap out at me.
After tax that will be about 15,000.
2,500 is ridiculously cheap for Shanghai, even the suburbs. If the school can find 90sqm places for 2,500 get them to send you the link. I'm still laughing at this. Maybe I'm wrong but if you told a Chinese person you could rent a 90sqm place in Shanghai for 2,500 a month, they'd snap it up and wouldn't even consider thinking about it.
When you say 'teaching cert' do you mean you're a qualified teacher in your home country? If so I think the offers you're getting are low. Especially the Shanghai one. |

yeah I have a social studies teaching credential from the state of Texas but sadly I could never get a social studies teaching job in Texas because, wait for it... I didn't have any social studies teaching experience ugh. Since I have an MA I went the cushy Korea univ ESL route for 15 years but that gravy train is ending. Came here to get some history experience I could possibly take to the international school or US school route.
I'm making 19k/month after tax at a "Foreign Language High School" here in Chongqing to teach American History but the admin and city are driving me nuts. Wouldn't recommend this place took the job out of desperation
Yeah I thought that offer in Shanghai was low ball especially the housing. I'm trying to get a history position but I'm having the same problem here that I have only 1 semester of history teaching experience (Last fall I was hired for what I thought was a history teaching position at what I was told was a top notch Foreign Language School in Nanjing, get over there and suddenly told "job has changed you will be teaching English Language Arts, well guess how that went,  )so now I'm again having the problem of no history teaching experience again plus having to explain what a clusterf the past year has been.
Given all the headaches ( lowball offers) and competition of I'm seriously thinking of just doing ESL in Shenzhen, not a training center job, weather is agreeable for me etc. I really would like to be a serious subject teacher but even here being a history teacher is a daunting task |

I'm in a similar boat, I'm a newly qualified licensed teacher, however I got 19000 plus housing provided.
One thing I've decided is that I'm not going to bother going housing allowance again unless I've got about 200,000 stacked in my bank because it's not worth the hassle.
I will go traveling in the summer and am prepared to blow 90% of my savings on enjoying it, because once I arrive in Shanghai I have a house provided, and can make 10,000 or less last me that first month.
Getting a housing allowance isn't good for me because you may have to pay 6 months plus one month deposit plus agency fee plus a years internet plus top up 1000 on electricity, then buy anymore mattresses, knives, ovens etc. Even if you found a place for 2500 that may add up to 25000+, over $4000 I don't want to lay out.
Anyways, the reason I took a job including housing is that Chinese schools very very rarely give you adequate housing allowance. A nice place even in Pudong will probably be 6000+
I've seen some schools offer 1000 for housing in Shanghai! 1000!!! Unreal. Couldn't believe it. Do they want their teachers living 2 to a room in a 6 floor walk up? |

Well I checked the place out yesterday, met with teachers, admin and real estate people. School was nice, new facilities, like the school outside of Shenzhen, I'd have my own classroom unlike my situation here in Chongqing or Nanjing. Wifi, smartboards, podiums with computers connected to the net/smartboards. I would kill for that kind of stuff here. I keep hearing from people around Chongqing that the school I work at has the best reputation of Foreign Language Schools in the region. I'm like you're kidding, school has no technology, computer lab doesn't work, heck I cant even get them to have my midterm done via Scan-Tron, I have 4,000+ multiple choice questions to grade by hand this weekend
Got them to jump the money and housing up to reasonable levels. I'm inclined to take it
some teachers love the place, heard several are leaving griping about the management, not happy with supervising self study one weeknight (M-TH) a week, I'm like "how would you like to teach on Sunday nights. Typical China |

I also recently got a job in Shanghai that offers a housing allowance of 7000 rmb. From what I've been told you don't need 6 months upfront, but rather two months (first and last) and a one month deposit. If anyone else has rented recently, I'd like to hear their opinion on this as well, so I can plan for it.
I'm still taking that summer vacation and hope I have enough for the down payment on securing an apartment.
From what I've been told and with my own research,my allowance will afford me a small, one bedroom apartment in the Hongqiao area. |

Is this the one in Shanghai? What is a reasonable level for housing that you are thinking of taking? The rents are ridiculously high is what I'm finding out. Best of luck! |

Well the job is near Hui nan station on line 16 close to PVG airport and the Wild Animal Park, talked to several teachers there they all said they've gotten something in the price range within 10 minutes from the school. It ain't Jing'an but considering where I am at now, I'll take it |

7k, I would say that's well above standard. I'm only getting half that and many others also.
There's no reason that you can't get a nice two bedroom apartment for that! You just need to be smart. For example, I live just outside Xujiahui (centre of Xuhui district) where you can rent a decent one bedroom for 3-3.5k and a nice 2 bedroom for 5-7k. If I lived just a couple of km more central (French Concession), the rent almost doubles.
I'm walking distance from lines 12 & 1 and just a short taxi ride to wherever I want to go. It's super convenient and a really nice area. The vast majority of Expats feel that they must live in Jingan or the French Concession, my question is always why? |

That's cool that it is working out for you. I see from my research that Xujiahui area has a lot going for it. I see lots of malls and three subway lines converge there. From what I've seen on some websites, I can get a small, furnished, one bedroom for 6000-7000 rmb near Hongqiao area. I want to live close to my work and close to the metro which I don't think should be a problem. Part of me wants to be closer to Jingan and the French Concession just because my new gym is opening in Jingan area..haha, but I don't want to be too far from my work. How much rent did you have to pay when you moved in? |
