|
|
Hi All,
I was wondering if someone who works for a university can renegociate his contract?
Also is it possible to renegociate on:
- The contract premium for europeans and americans
- The exceptional increase for PhDs
What is the most appropriate period to renegociate with the HR? April, May, June or at the beginning of the year when the contract will be established?
Many thanks for your advice by advance! |

Your nationality is already factored into your pay, if that's criteria your employer considers. However, if they didn't give you brownie points for your PhD in your current contract, don't count on it for the new contract unless the scope of your employment will change because of your doctorate (e.g., you start teaching in the university's education program, are given admin responsibilities, etc.). That type of change is a discussion you'd most likely first have with your program administrator, vice dean, or dean for approval.
If your PhD is unrelated to TESOL/education or was partially or wholly completed online, that will be a tough sell, so be prepared to (diplomatically) defend why you believe you should be paid more (i.e., how it benefits the university/students). But don't hold your breath.
Generally, changes would be in effect on the new contract once the current one expires. You need to find out from HR when faculty agreements will be reviewed for renewal. |

Sure, but the ones who work for a university will be the HR Department, and for the most part, they will re-negotiate your contact downwards.
I know that is not what you were looking for, but I have seen this happen and the employees are basically told to take it or leave. The Happiness Committees are very busy making sure that only "happy employees" are on campus, and those who are not happy with a new contract do not have to stay around and grumble about it. |

If you try to do it, make sure you run the spell check on your query letter before sending out... |
