Hi everyone
I don't know how many of you indulge in this dangerous activity but wether its in Turkey or China (god forbid ) my tale may be of interest . On the 27th of June we were on our way to Ayvalik for the start of the holidays when we were ambushed by a high speed Opel Vectra coming through a stop sign and slicing off the front end of my Fiat Palio, mercifully we suffered no serious injury and as the other bloke was totally in the wrong the local police and Gendarme took our side and slapped the other guys wrist . So what normally happens here ? your car is taken away to be repaired at the other drivers insurance companies expense and you should feel that some kind of additional compensation may be coming your way right ? WRONG!!
Despite the fact that through no fault of my own I was deprived of the use of my vehicle (today I get it back insahlaah) suffered shock and trauma ,a ruined holiday and unnecessary travelling expenses not to mention the inconvenience of having to go everywhere by bus etc I am unlikely to ever receive any extra payment for the distress and suffering suffered .
I did have a full insurance policy but that makes no difference ,so be warned boys and girls if you do go driving its basically at your own risk I dread to think what would have happened if I had being at fault or even if one of us had being killed or badly injured doesn't bear thinking about . The road checks are in full swing at this time of the year but still the carnage goes on ,in the same week that I had my incident one of my students from the uni was in a smash ,a bad one ,she died and so did six others all under 25 years of age ,makes you think ,puts life in perspective , maybe Denise is right some people really know how to wound with words too well, thats a sign of a good education isn't it ???? |

Every time there's a long weekend here in Spain, there are usually 70 or more road deaths and as many injuries besides. Why? Take your pick from speeding, not wearing seatbelts and drink-driving, or a combination thereof. Recently a motorcyclist was killed whilst riding in the dark with neither lights nor a helmet. He was carrying not one, but two passengers.
A student of mine told me how the police stopped him when he was driving drunk on the motorway. They detained him for a few hours and then let him continue his journey. No fine, not even a slap on the wrist.
I often wonder what the police do here to earn their money. |
