I was put in contact with this school via a recruiter for a history/government position I go through an interview then a demo lesson 10 days ago via Skype. All goes well
Then right after the demo on the 11th, I get an email from them outlining an offer with salary (23k/month), benefits (housing supplied nice pics, nice money for airfare etc) do my due diligence including emailing teachers there. It all checks out and last Weds after talking to my family and I decide to accept the offer.
Don't hear anything from them for a couple of days then on Friday I get an email from the HR person saying they are prepping for an "open house" this weekend and would get me the contract today.
Well today instead of getting a contract, I got an email from the HR person saying because "the recruiters fee is too high and they can't afford it" and decide not to offer me the job. I had already turned down a couple of other jobs for this job.
Recruiter said the excuse was BS, they knew the fee when the contacted him and when they got my resume they were willing to cut the fee to get me the job he told me (doubt that). Apparently they had another teacher they wanted more than my and pulled the rug out from under me.
I wish I remember the name of the agency. I don't trust either of them.
This is not the first time this year I've been screwed by a school in China. PM me for the details about that nightmare
Just be aware of this school |

My guess is that the recruiter's fee is equal to one month of your salary.
The school probably found someone that did not use a recruiter and/or is willing to work for less.
Do not take it personally. It is all about money.
Thanks for posting your experience. |

Generally speaking, the harsh truth is that until that contract is signed, anything can happen. People should protect themselves by either keeping the job they have for as long as possible even if they plan to move on, or still keep looking for a job even if there is an 'agreement' with one company. No one except you is going to protect your back.
I don't think this is a China situation either. Jobs which seem guaranteed one day can disappear the next day in any country. |

So true. I know a guy who would still interview for jobs even after he's had three very solid offers. Good thing, too, as one got rescinded without any explanation and the one gave him a contract that was very different from what was agreed. Luckily for him, the third one went off without a hitch. |
