There is a thread from four years ago about this place. But according to the video (below) it has expanded since then. Does anybody have any experience from this place, or have any knowledge from friends or colleagues who have worked there. From the previous thread, it seems they work you hard, but pay a reasonable salary. I have actually been there, about six years ago. I know it is out in the sticks.

Any updates would be appreciated.

I live and work in Zhuhai, but not at UIC. I have met a few of their teachers though, and it seems like a decent place to work. A lot of teaching and office hours compared to other uni gigs though, but the pay is supposed to be commensurate. The best place to get current info from the teachers there would be to join the Zhuhai expat group on Facebook and enquire therein. Also Zhuhai Nights website @ http://www.zhuhainights.com/ might have some of their teachers as members.
It's not as 'out in the sticks' as it would have been six years ago. Tangjia, where it's located has quite a large expat community serving the four nearby universities and there's a few western bars and restaurants there, as well as a fairly good western imported food shop. Also the high speed rail runs nearby and connects with both Gongbei, which is right on the Macau border and is quite lively in and of itself, and Guangzhou, which is only about thirty minutes by train now.[/quote] |

Thanks, Doogsville. That's good news about the improved transport. I recall it took me about 50 mins to get there from Zhuhai city centre, last time. I don't mind places that have high work standards. I kind of prefer them.
Anyway, I put in an application for a position there. Let's see what happens. |

High work standards, or high workloads? You should expect plenty of the latter. Pay is above average, but you earn every bit. Holidays are good and location is tolerable. |

Have just done a search and came across a 10 year old thread : http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=41188&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=zuhai&start=0 . Pay particular attention to what "Mosley" has stated: eg being paid by the hour, "atrocious " management, etc.
Maybe things have improved a lot over the past decade ? Maybe not ! Anyway, before applying for a job at this college, as someone else has suggested, send some queries to the various Zhuhai expat sites in order to find out what the current situation is. |

That thread is about the Beijing Normal University campus in Zhuhai, it's not related to the UIC campus or university. The situation at UIC is very different from that at BNU, and indeed, BNU, having gone through a bad patch, seems to be getting better, or at least so I gather. UIC offers two year contracts and totally different terms and conditions to BNU. |

Do continue. It would be great to know what the differences are. |

Anyway, another university in ZH has today just offered me a "tentative position", and for a higher ranking position than UIC offers, so looks like the UIC situation won't matter. It's tentative because they have to seek approval from the offshore university, main campus. Hopefully it will come through. I wouldn't mind living in Zhuhai at all. There are much worse places in China, that's for sure. |

I taught at UIC and will second that it is (was?) well-run with a good salary. The workload was on par with Xi'an Jiaotong Liverpool or Nottingham Ningbo, meaning a hell of a lot of (mostly pointless) essay grading. Students were good for the most part. The location really sucked- yes, 50 minutes by bus to the city. The train will get you to Gongbei rather fast tho. All in all a good gig in a good city, but too far out for my tastes. I left to start my own company, so my departure was an amicable one. That was three years ago- not sure what has changed in that time. |

I am guessing the annual income will be a bit less than in Suzhou or Ningbo, but that the amount of paid holidays is more. Location-wise, Zhuhai is probably better overall (warmer and less air pollution), but being somewhat far from the more interesting parts of the city is something they all suffer from. |

Do you know if they typically are only looking for lecturers in August? Or if they do a spring intake as well?
I read somewhere that the job consists of a whole lot of essay grading and assignment of assistance compared to classroom teaching, is this true? |

I've got an interview for a Fall 2017 position with the UIC English Center soon, any new information on what it's like to work there? I'm already familiar with the location, transportation issues, etc., so more looking for teaching and housing info.
Thanks |
