Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did a search and checked several posts on the first couple pages.

I've been offered a 2 year contract teaching at a preschool. Is a 2 year contract common? Something to avoid? Are employers usually willing to negotiate on this? I've already asked if we can do a 1 year contract, don't have a reply yet.

On a related point, the contract says that either party can terminate the contract at the end of the first year without reason, but if the contract is terminated in this way by either party, I have to pay back the cost of moving... and the apartment rental? The part about housing isn't clear, but it's pretty clear that they can fire me after a year for no reason and make me pay them back for the flight and shipping.

That's ridiculous, as I'm sure you realise. You can either give them a chance to redeem themselves by taking it out of the contract, or just walk away and find another job.

To address your original post, I know of only one employer, a university, that offers two year contracts. I've looked at hundreds of job ads over the years in China and never seen another.

There's no reason to offer or to accept a two-year contract. If the first year is a good fit, just renew. I was offered a long contract after I was at a school for two weeks. I signed for a second year, and things went south FAST. I learned that the year after I left, the school stiffed every FT there, then quit hiring foreigners.

One year renew option is the only way to go.

A friend of mine signed up on a 2 year contract a few years ago. He was a licensed teacher but was paid the same as the unlicensed teachers on staff (all on 1 year contracts) in the international department.
The funny thing is he got shafted with only one airfare allowance payment. He would have gotten two airfare allowance payments if he was on a 1 year contract and renewed it for a second year.
So not only did they want to tie a licensed teacher down for 2 years, they wanted to screw him out of some money also Sad

Run away, this is ridiculous!

In my contract for example:
Both parties are required to give one (1) month’s notice of the termination of this Agreement. In the event of
either party failing to comply with this provision, a penalty equivalent to one month’s salary shall be payable to the other party, except in the event of serious misconduct
as defined in Clause (9C) of this Agreement.

The school I work at has two teachers who are on two year contracts.
They have been here about 6 yrs. One teaches science in primary school and one works in the Kindergarten.

They are Filipino and have to go home every year to get approval from the Philippine government to extend their stay here.
