Hi everyone. I am new to these boards, so thanks in advance for everyone's help.
Is there anyone that works for or has worked for VIPKID? They advertise online positions on Dave's ESL Cafe but search as I might I can't seem to find any teachers that have worked for or are working for them. No reviews or hits on Google rather than from the company's website. Any help, advice or input on them would be appreciated. |

Your best bet is to ask them if you can speak to a former teacher. This comes with its own caveat... they will obviously give you the contact information of someone with a positive opinion or someone who is too scared to give you the truth... |

So - getting obviously bogus information is the best bet? |

You both make a good point. That is why I was asking here. Seems like I would get more truthful information from someone on these forums. |

Just went through the interview and I got turned down with 11 years experience. Their feedback and reason for not offering me a position was over such trivial things. I understand they want things done in a certain way but the things I was turned down for were things that are normally covered in training. Oh well. |

They have a opening listed on another board. I must admit to being skeptical of an organization that provides Internet based instruction, but uses GMail. |

I don't see that they use Gmail. Where do you see that? |

I was also turned down, with well above average credentials. Here in Thailand, it's always "style over substance," so maybe it's the same there. It occurred to me that they were looking for studio production type demonstrations to use in their curriculum. I can't think of anything they hate more than paying for intellectual property. They have software/hardware problems, and general internet issues in China. It will always cost you. They will keep hiring, no matter how many idle teachers they have. If they had wanted me to use a puppet; they should have told me so. They absolutely fit into the profile of someone that needs to pay first. The second interview, the lady makes a huge stink about the clarity of my webcam....and I admit it is 8 years old and only 1 Mp, but there are 200 computer stores within five miles of here. The videos they told me to watch were laughable. |

Yeah the videos are dumb. After the first interview (which I passed the second time) I am wondering why I have to do this stupid practicum. Full class no pay and after all the training which isn't paid until you get hired! |

According to www.scamaudit.com, the site gets 90 visitors per day...so maybe they only have 10-20 students. Also, the pay is almost too good to be true, compared with what some of the others are paying. OKPANDA is paying 1.50 USD for a 25 minute lesson. |

Well that is the opposite extreme. A buck 50 for a lesson? Who would work for that? Also did they say you failed the second interview because you didn't use a hand puppet? I mean did they expect you to purchase those supplies before even getting the job? Wouldn't scamaudit only record visits outside of China? I mean isn't China kind of controlling with their internet and hence stats regarding them might not be completely accurate? Just asking. |

The Filipinos will work for peanuts. They are close to NES, but not the real thing. I don't know the nitty gritty on the website audits, but it is still the WWW, even though they do have their extra layer of censoring.
It was contradictory to say the least. First, they tell you that you are teaching a five year old, who may not give you any response at all. Then, they show you a video of a lesson that has been enhanced with many words that someone at that level wouldn't understand.
I've been a certified substitute in the US for 19 years, and taught everything from PK-12. Always just took the teaching materials that were dumped on me and followed along with the instructions. Over the years I was criticized for a lot lot things (lots of man hating elementary schools), but not once did they tell me I had bad technique on delivering the "Language Arts" lessons. Predominantly ESL students, as well.
My gut says something is rotten at VIPKID. Time (that won't be paid) will tell. |

So were the only reasons they gave for not hiring you regarding your webcam and not using a hand puppet? |

Not many specifics. They just said others had more of what they are looking for. I'm a young looking 51, male. I have a lot of business experience, perhaps they thought I would call them on the BS. While online learning is a great thing, and rapidly expanding; it seems like there is a glut of these places. There is a lot of free stuff out there, too. |
