Universities admissions will be monitored from next year to ensure British students are not being discriminated against in favour of foreign applicants who can pay more.

An investigation by The Sunday Times showed that universities are increasingly recruiting lucrative overseas students, while at the same time, the number of places offered to UK teenagers is falling.

Figures showed that from 2008 to 2016, the number British undergraduates at 23 universities fell by more than 33,000, the equivalent of more than 4,000 UK students missing out each year.

In contrast the number of degrees offered to non-EU high students, who pay far higher fees, rose by 22,000. While British student fees are capped at £9,250 a year, foreign students can pay up to £35,000 a year, for subjects like medicine.

Overall, it might be a good thing. People forget that student numbers include international students so fewer people are getting to university than it may seem. International students at most good universities like Durham, Lancaster, or Exeter make up around 25-30% of the student enrolment. But, this includes postgrads.. I think keeping the number at about 20-25% for undergraduate courses seems sensible.

One of the principal functions of a university should be to educate and train the population. In Scotland and rUK, there has been increasing marketisation of tertiary education. Walk around the university areas of Glasgow or Edinburgh and you will be astonished at the number of foreign students, Glasgow School of Art used to be a training ground for local talent. It is now like a finishing school for trendies from the Home Counties !
