|

I received my new Residence Permit yesterday. Seems the renewal process is still the same as previous years. I thought that there has been a grading system introduced and we will be classified A, B or C etc.
Just curious, does this only happen for newbies and/or for people changing to a new school? |

Your school probably processed under the old system.
As of 15th June that is no longer an option. The ABC system is now fully operational. |

If you saw any of the purported "criteria", you'd conclude that it was all a joke started by wiseguys in the Foreign Expert community. Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear. |

17th June is the date on my new RP. But I guess all of the paperwork had been submitted before the 15th. Cheers. |

I got my Work Permit a couple days ago. They issued me with a card stating that I'm a class B worker. I am the first teacher at my school to receive this new card. The school took it back though because they needed it as part of the application for the Residence Permit.
I transferred from Nanjing to Suzhou and I had to go through most of the new hoops that have been mentioned on this forum. |

Man things are getting grim.
I've been told everything has to be stamped and authed. The Chinese doing it seem to be unaware how much hassle this is, and of course it's almost $200 to get everything authed, so a police check plus a TEFL stamp will set me back $400.
Every time there is a new requirement. This time they asked for previous employers letters. WHO HAS THAT? When I moved on in previous working jobs in China I didn't need it so didn't ask for it. Also, they must have my seven years of working residence permits on file somewhere, so why is it up to me to show I've worked for seven years when they gave me seven years of work permits? |

Certainly seems that way! I think it's going to discourage FTs from changing employers in the future (could be more hassle than it's worth)!
All I've done for the past 3 RPs is give my passport to my employer for a couple of weeks! |

Do you know of anyone who has actually been classified by the ABC criteria? |

Letters of release and residence permits in my passport were all I needed, though I do have letters of recommendation from stateside employers and professors. |

The application system gives the employer a choice which one to apply for. Some of the original published criteria was as you said hype, but it is broadly similar.
If the employer applies for B and the applicant does not make the criteria they will be downgraded and processed as a C.
I was given B, we didn't apply for A as it appeared I was just short of the criteria needed by two points.
These new cards don't really do much for us except replace the FEC and booklet. There is no indication yet if they will be accepted as identification and certainly won't work in the way Chinese ID cards do. There is also no mention on the card that it belongs to us as there was in the books so I expect most employers will want to hang on to them but that is to be seen. |

Wait. Weren't you issued a work permit at the same time that you were issued a residence permit?
After reading about the rigamarole experienced by so many other FTs, there must be an advantage to working for a public university. I got all of my degrees, letters, etc. authenticated many years ago, so none of the add-on hassles have affected me.
So far. |

Nope. They are issued at different offices and are completely different applications. You need to get the WP before you can apply for a RP. |

Yes, I confirm this is correct. The new work permit (ABC card) has to be applied for and obtained first. It is then handed in to the PSB to procure the resident permit.
The new work permit card has replaced the former Foreign Experts Certificate and Experts Book.
The new card does not have an expiry date and is issued once. For renewals, all that has to be renewed is the resident permit. If you change jobs or leave, the card must be surrendered and then the system will be updated. You just need to supply your new school with the card number and the new school can then find your details and take over the file once the issuing office has received the card back.
It seems to be that this year those who applied and were processed under the former system will still have books and the FEC certificate, those who applied under the new system will have cards. Anyone applying or being processed after 15th June will be under the new system. The old one has been closed down and is now in 'view only' mode. |

Things take forever.
I tried to transfer but all of the malarky meant that 6 weeks wasn't enough. Now trying to go through the new system of getting a Z visa invitation, and I'm told 10 working days for the ABC card and then another ten days for invitation.
Good thing though, now the school can email documents rather than send physical copies, which seems an improvement. |

I can understand this completely. I gave my FAO every single document that was requested on the 8th of March. I've been told I'll finally get my RP by the end of next week. |
