Hi everybody!

I'm confused about what certificate to get before i look for a teaching job abroad. I'm from Istanbul, Turkey and i'm not a native speaker.. I studied English Language & Literature and right now i'm working as an English teacher in a private elementary school. I would like to apply to teaching jobs in Latin America & Asia. Do any of you know that i should have a seperate certificate to teach children abroad?

Thank you & Have a great week!

Best wishes!!

You first need to see which countries you can legally teach in. Take a look at this recent thread: (Non native) Newbie wants to teach abroad since it includes Asia.

I'm not positive you need a certificate because I have heard so many employers tell me they do not accept certificates.

Look at the job boards here and see how many actually require them.

If you're a native speaker then your English is going to be far superior to their English. Not sure how much the certificate schools offer as far as classroom management or lesson plan instruction-- and even that could be googled on how to format a lesson plan.

Places like Thailand are possible IF you have a degree and meet the other documentary requirements to get a visa and work permit.
Specifically: degree, transcripts, police clearance, TOEIC test (IELTS is also accepted), passport.

If no bachelor degree then no chance for NNES in east Asia.

This is not accurate in many cases. In certain places/cases, a certificate is required in addition to a degree to obtain a work permit.
Also, for newbies that have never taught before, it is probably a good idea to get one anyway before being landed in a classroom for the first time in their lives! At least they will feel a little bit prepared.
