Hi. I have a TEFL certificate that is an online cert. I need it authenticated by the embassy in the US. The embassy doesn't answer their phone and my visa agent doesn't seem to know anything.

Can anyone help me by telling me the things I need to get that online TEFL certificate authenticated by the embassy?

In my experience, I've only been asked to have my University degree authenticated.

I would ask your employer why this is necessary? Is it because it was an online course? Understand that the rules are different throughout the country.

If you find it's necessary, PM me and I can refer you to an agency in Washington, DC that authenticated my diploma and also processed my Z visa.

Requesting authentication of your TEFL sounds like nonsense to me.

It is nonsense, but sadly things like this are all too common in China. This is a top down culture, so orders from above must be obeyed at all costs. Sadly the orders that come down from above are often vague or even impossible to carry out. This sounds like someone has been told that 'documents' must be authenticated, but not told which documents. Rather than ask, which would be a loss of face and an admission of failure, they simply pass the buck down the line, in this case to the FT. If the FT cannot comply they are the problem and the word can be passed up the chain that the foreigner is too stupid to do what they are asked. Everyone pretends everything is okay, everyone pretends they are happy. Except the poor FT of course, but hey, we don't count.

This is a pretty accurate description of the way things are in China.
