Hi, i have noticed that on a number of job adverts for the KSA, online CELTA and tefl qualifications aren't recognized. I am not sure if the same applies to online MAs. I am currently enrolled on an MA at a UK university with most of the modules taught via distance learning.
I am looking to apply for university positions in the KSA for August / September this year or at the beginning of 2018, when I hope to have completed my degree. I am a UK citizen with a BA and CELTA, both from the UK, and 10 years esl teaching experience. Thanks, in advance, for any clarification on this.

Any kind of distance learning is not accepted. The Saudi Consulate requires written confirmation from your university to confirm that your MA was not studied through distance learning.

Outside the Middle East you will probably be fine. Some other Gulf countries may accept your MA but the chances are not great.

Most of the Gulf countries do not accept any online degrees. KSA definitely does not. The UAE used to recognize them until the reorganization of the MoHE and MoE into one Ministry. Since them none are recognized.

Perhaps Oman?

The way prospects in Oman are at the moment, it would probably recognise an online MA, in that, employers would hire you with a BA and CELTA anyway, so you might get 50 rials extra a month from having the MA. Whether Sultan Qaboos University accepted it or the Military college in Muscat, that would be an interesting question.

If your BA was completed on campus, you can probably use it as your qualifying degree, especially if it's TESOL related. Just be aware your salary will very likely be based on your BA only.

Non-recognition of online degrees has been the position of the Saudi Government for many years. Has the OP only just noticed ?

I've heard that if any part of your MA was residential, it will be accepted. For example, mine requires three months residential in the summer. The rest is online.

Can anyone confirm this?

Nope... it is the opposite. If any part of your degree is online - and they confirm this with your university - they will not accept it.

Amazing how some of them offer an online MA as a job benefit.

This employee benefit is typical of some institutes of higher ed that are affiliated with a parent university in the west.

Even if the Saudi government doesn't accept online qualifications for work visa purposes, that doesn't mean other countries will reject it. You'll have a degree regardless.

It's never a good idea to get a terminal degree like an MA TESOL with the sole intent of using it to work in a specific country or region; visa requirements regarding qualifications have changed in much of the GCC over the past 3-4 years. (Frankly, a degree in curriculum and instruction with a focus on learning technologies would open more doors for you abroad and at home.) Plus, some GCC countries are pushing to replace expats with qualified nationals. For example, scroll down this forum to the thread, No expats by 2020. Also see What's left of the ME and TEFLdom??

As numerous others have said, degrees with any online components are not accepted by the Saudi Cultural Mission/Embassy. I (successfully) submitted my PGCE for attestation.

It's just ironic as the place I'm going hired me on the strength of my (distance) MA Laughing

Does your diploma and transcripts say "online" or "distance" anywhere? If not, submit them and say nothing about it.

The mode of instruction gets checked with the university registrar during the degree authentication process.
