Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone has ever rented a decent place in Suzhou on the cheap?

You know, single apartment, not more than 3000 a month? Something like that?

Thanks!

What area of Suzhou?

Finding a one bedroom apartment for under 3,000 won't be hard. Use the Chinese websites not the ones in English. The English language websites are geared to rich expats and have a big markup. It's not too hard to navigate Chinese websites even if you know little Chinese. You can also use Google Chrome and translate the page - translation is a little off but it will be enough for you to get an idea of what your money will get you.

I am sure it depends on area, but for 3000 you could get 3 bed 2 bath. I would imagine getting one room place would be possible.

From what I know, for Suzhou that's not happening. Unless you're living miles outside the city centre or SIP.

Yeah, not sure, just did a quick search on 58.com and looked at Suzhou. I will be moving to Wuxi next week and we will pay about 3000 for a 3 bedroom place next to the subway and about 4 stops from the city center.

actually, SIP was my place of choice, and I was hoping to find something decent for under 3,000.

You can find decent for under 3,000 in SIP, just not 3 bedrooms 2 bathrooms. A friend is paying 4,400 for 3 bedroom 2 bathroom. Another is paying 3,400 for 2 bedroom 1 bathroom. Another is paying 3,500 for 2 bedroom 1 bathroom. Another is paying 2,800 for 2 bedroom one bathroom. But to be fair the SIP area is huge. And the apartments are of different qualities.

Not trying to argue, but when I go back to 58.com and narrow the search to SIP and 3 bedrooms there are many listings. Again, not familiar with the market their or anything, never rented there, but it seems there are places. They could be bait and switch advertizements.

Yeah, I thought that too when I went to visit friends, I was considering moving there. But as you thought, a lot are bait and switch. Go to estate agents and they say 'oh it's just sold', or 'not available' followed up by 'but we do have XYZ'. Also, SIP is massive, it's possible to be in SIP but still ages away from decent things.

Not saying there aren't good apartments available, just trying to relay my friends' experiences who do live there. As I said, I don't live in the area so can't comment personally. Just sharing experiences.

Do you want to find one solo or use an agent? My first Suzhou apt came via a friend - he hooked me up as his friend from the UK got hurt badly and had to leave China. The owner told my friend that if he found him a new tenet he would give back the whole deposit. He kept his word and I stayed there for five years. He only asked me to leave cause his parents lived with him and they were getting on his nerves so he wanted them to live in my room. I paid 1800y a month for the first 4 years then he upped it to 2000y a month.

I moved out and now pay 2700y a month in a much nicer compound. I used an agent.

Look on Suzhou Expats Facebook page and contact Hillary Wong if you want help. Her agency charges 1/2 months rent and the also manage the apartment. Manage means when something breaks they fix it - no cost to you. If the moderator deletes the agents name I posted then send me a private message.

Any more questions feel free to ask. I've been in Suzhou for 7 years.
