Considering a possible job change next year may be in play, I am wondering if there is any point in sorting out some documents during my upcoming holiday. Is it, for example, worth getting the degree authentication and legalization done when away or is an expiry date a concern?
Are there any other admin tasks I could do to make the process of changing jobs within China easier if and when the time comes? Or, are the transfer process stipulations so inconsistantly applied that all bets are off, and it's best to just wait until the time comes before preparing any documents?
Don't go home often and don't want to keep relying on family running around for me. Any advice much appreciated. |

Makes sense to get your degree authenticated. I don't see the requirement being dropped, if anything it will be rolled out nationwide. As far as I'm aware, authentication doesn't have an expiry date. Once you've got it, you've got it.
Police checks, however, do expire. I was told it had to be within the last 6 months. So I'd hold off on that just now, do it when you need it. |

You may need to get a TEFL for your next job. You may need the degree authenticated. You may need a criminal background check but those have a time expiry date I understand. Since they are now stamping and crimping writing on the diploma I would pick up another "original" copy of your diploma so you have something fresh in case you need one. I got one back home before I left.
Now I am in the process of getting a criminal background check, so if I need to get something sent from home I will ask for that also. Who knows, the next allegation might be that you took someone else's authenticated diploma LOL |

Thanks for the advice. I'll try getting the degrees done, and possibly ordering extra originals, while I'm back home.

Isnt it a copy of your degree cert that gets done? |

Cambridge English provides a notarized certifying statement. I suggest getting it done now if you expect to teach long term and in other countries. |

| You only need to get your highest degree legalised and a criminal background check legalised for a Z visa. That's what I have been told to do by my employer anyway. |

Yes I had one when I lost my original. They should offer you a replacement original certificate though just like universities do. I can see no reason why they don't do this. They are just being pompous. It's signed but not notarised. Only a solicitor can notarise a document. |

Pompous? Cambridge English doesn't owe you or anyone else another original cert as a replacement. Losing the one you were issued shows a lack of responsibility on your part; you're expected to safeguard important original documents.
As for a notarized certifying statement, see the section "Postage and additional options" on the form per the Cambridge English link I provided. |

Yeh I saw it. You can OPT to get your certifying statement notarised (pointless since no one has ever in the history of my employment asked for a notarised TEFL cert) and they OVERCHARGE by a staggering amount.
£160 to notarise a non-original-certificate which is written on white paper and has not seal.
You could get it notarised for £30 if you went to a notary yourself or you could just certify it at a local solicitor's office for as little as £5. A month's study of how to teach English is not worth that expense. EVen £28 for the basic certifying statement is overpriced. Most unis offer a replacement orignal degree for £20. |

What happened was I went to my university in person and asked them about this. There were two people. One person at the university who handles "diploma stuff" and I assume the other person was a notary public. This is apparently the way the university handles things. I asked if they had to stamp on it and they said yes. Then, they told me they can mail out a new one free of charge within a week. So, I have two "original copies", one notarized by them, authenticated by the Secretary of State, and one that has nothing stamped on it.
However, since I did not need to get the diploma authenticated with the Chinese consulate when I came to China in March I had to get a new authenticated diploma in order to apply for a new residence permit. In that case, we just copied my diploma that was notarized and had the Great Seal of the State sticker put on it from the Secretary of State. We got that authenticated through the Chinese consulate, and so far the authorities are accepting that one.
I assume the reason for this is that I am in China now and they cannot recognize the Great Seal of the State sticker as being a legit sticker or just something a grade school teacher gives their students for good behavior  |
