Hello,

I would like to know if people can share some experiences of applying for University jobs which don't display the salary range in the job advertisement.

There are 2 jobs I would like to apply to but I'm a little afraid of doing all the groundwork (applying, references, etc) in case compensation is not appealing...

Any experiences on this? Thanks a lot!

If I were you and that were the situation I wouldn't even waste my time applying.

Just to add to this... It would be the first question I ask and I would move on immediately if I didn't receive a satisfactory answer.

If the salary was better than average they would perhaps clearly advertise it. No real harm in asking though. At least they never stated it as “competitive”. That has only meant bad news in my previous job searches.

Thanks everyone for your answers Smile

I agree with you in that asking doesn't hurt, so I think will do that. In the worst of cases they don't answer (it has happened to me before and decided not to apply in the end).

Whenever I see a vague "competitive salary" in the job description, it makes me wonder if the salary is too low that if they advertise it no one will apply... Rolling Eyes

It would be good institutions were upfront about the whole package, as what encourages teachers to apply is whether that suits them or not. It would save plenty of time! Laughing

Not all job ads in our home countries state salary or even range. Don't hold off on applying because of that minor issue.
Your sole aim right now is the get an offer. Once they've ecided they want you, that's the time to decide if you want them.
We're in the hiring season for the fall. you should firing off applications daily.

It's usually the case that when the old dodge competitive salary is used there are other key things missing as well, e.g., contact hours a week, office hours etc. Just for fun, I send a resume and ask for a blank, i.e., no name or signature, contract to be sent before an interview is scheduled. Funny thing, I've never received a contract yet!
