As a teacher (one who has their act together), you have far better/greater odds of success in Japan.
If you think Japan's pension system is somehow worthless, or not worth betting on, compare the (bankrupt) teacher pension system in Illinois--if you can escape servitude there as an adjunct. |

That's the feeling I get too.
An ALT in a public school is just an entertainer. The schools and dispatch companies may say otherwise, but don't you believe it.
First, the Japanese school system still focuses on reading English, so that the kids pass their entrance exams. The spoken English that they learn is limited to self-introductions which ALTs test them on with interview tests.
And secondly, the schools don't want proper foreign English teachers because they make the Japanese English teachers look inferior.
So, they hire some young foreigner in her / his 20's to jump around the classroom and act cheerful. |

They want young people who can be bossed around.
No knowing Japanese is a plus.
Experienced people who are qualified would get tired of this. |
