Weird. "Sentenced"? I thought people were just deported for that.

You can't be deported without being sentenced guilty of the crime.

Sentenced to "administrative punishment", whatever that means. (I thought that was what the class scheduler did to me when I taught at a university in Guangdong. LOL) Seriously, I don't know whether "administrative punishment" includes jail time or deportation or both or neither.

More likely a fine for estimated unpaid taxes and deportation.

This, on the heels of the big confrontation between Canada and China over the arrest of Huawei Financial Chief (daughter of the founder of Huawei). In the midst of this turmoil it's not the best move to go get involved in something illegal.

I'm sorry for what happened to her but thems are the stakes at the moment.

I am left wondering if she was in the country teaching illegally on purpose, if her employers simply didn't get her a visa despite promising to do so and exploited her ignorance of the law, or if she was doing private lessons on the side and in the midst of this Huawei furor one of her students' parents (or a friend of the family) reported her or something.

"McIver had reportedly been teaching in China for several months before her detention, after school officials transferred her to a school in a different city from the one where she was originally hired, according to the National Post."

So it wasn't actually her fault, it was all because she didn't realize that being transferred would cause problems for her visa... and her employers didn't care?
