Do British Council teaching vacancies always require CELTA?

My gut feeling (and scanning previous job adverts) is that they do.

I've seen some interesting teaching vacancies, working for The British Council in Brunei and Sri Lanka. The academic requirements for applicants always seems to be a CELTA or a Trinity Cert.

I don't have a CELTA (but I'm studying the MA Adult Learning & Global Change, which IMHO, is a very relevant course). I have been teaching adults and young learners in south-east Asia for about 10 years, so I'm not a new or inexperienced teacher.

What's your opinion about an experienced and practicing teacher taking a CELTA?

The problem is trying to fit the 4 week course in-between term-time. But I have found a CELTA course in Budapest which neatly fits into my annual holiday leave next March. I could fly over from Myanmar, attend the course, hopefully pass after 4 weeks of intensive study, and then return to teach at my employer's Summer School (probably exhausted after my CELTA course....).

I do not need a CELTA in my current employment (at an international school). But I'm looking longer-term AND recognise that I could also learn a lot about teaching and learning ideas from study of a CELTA.

What's the maximum age for working as a teacher with The British Council? (that's another consideration - I'm 58 years old).

They don't specifically require a CELTA but you need to have done a recognized TEFL course with a practical teaching element of 6 hours min. Not sure about retirement age and whether it's connected to local conditions but I've worked at BCs with plenty of people over 60.

I believe most BCs also require two years post-Celta (or equivalent) teaching experience. I've seen a couple of their branches state you only need one year post-Celta, but these are generally the less-desirable or lower-paid places - although that could get your foot in the door.

All the more reason to get a CELTA in the near future Smile

I have no plans to leave my current employer - but things are 'hotting up' a little in Myanmar and a heightened security level was announced by the government in Naypyidaw yesterday.

I got a reply back from the BC in Sri Lanka ==> a CELTA is required.

I checked my holiday leave dates and the CELTA course in Budapest doesn't fit well. But there is a CELTA course with ILA in Vietnam that seems to fit with my dates, (but is more expensive...).

So it sounds like my long annual break will be spent in the classroom.
