One's current employer must approve an iqama transfer to a second employer, right? I believe this has been the case for some time, but I wonder what the situation is today? Has anyone gone through this recently? Thank you.

They both have to agree. Some issue over loss of "slots", and there really is no
incentive for the first party to do it. In my time , I have also noticed it seems to favor those teachers from the region, or the cause. I also understand that if you can manage it once, then future employers may be obligated to faciliate the process again after a subsequent job change. Byzantine to say the least.
