Hello guys I hope I can find some advice. I have a few questions. I worked in china for 5 years until 2015, but a lot has changed since then. I am currently living in Japan but received accepted an offer to return to china next year. I’m hoping to get some advice on the documents process. I have a read a lot of information online, but have some questions.
1.) Do any Americans know a way to get the local (state) no criminal history check done while overseas? When I worked for a training school they had an online system to check, but things seem stricter than before. I will be going back to the States for Christmas but not to the state I resided in. Also the school is asking that I start the process this month instead of waiting.
2.) With regards to the notary and authentication process, does anyone have suggestions on how to do that from abroad? Maybe an agency that doesn’t cost and arm and a leg. My degree, CELTA and background check were issued in different states. I don’t have the time or money to go to 3 different states over the Christmas holiday.
3.) I’ve been told that Suzhou needs a document showing the cancellation of my foreign expert certificate from 2 years ago. At the time I left china, I wasn’t planning to return and for previous jobs I didn’t have to provide it, so I don’t have it. I assume others have left china and returned since the new procedures were put in place. Also I would assume, since the government issued and cancelled the FEC, they would have a record of it. Does anyone have experience getting a copy of the document issued?
I really appreciate any help that the community could provide. |

For 3) I was in the same situation a couple of years ago, Have you asked your new employer if they could help with this? I though it seemed like a long-shot, but they actually got in touch with my first employer (from 2 years ago prior too)and sorted it out for me. |

Thanks for the reply mate. I am hoping for the same result. I emailed my old agency twice in the last month, with no reply. I think it may be a situation of me no longer making them money so they don’t care. Funny thing is, my first school released me from my contract 2 weeks early and helped with the visa transfer when that agency hired me years ago. I went ahead and sent the email address and phone number to my new agency. Hopefully they will have better luck. |

As someone who's seen both sides of the pond, would you mind giving a brief comparison of life in China vs Japan? |

I am probably the wrong person to ask. I don’t fit in japan very well. I really miss the easy of finding a group of locals to join with in China. For me japan was difficult to really become a part of, but others love it. Also japan is extremely passive aggressive and I’m a more direct person. If someone has an issue I prefer to know about it instead of the hearing whispers around me. That said I know some teachers who love it here. I think just never fit in. I’ve had close chinese friends my entire life who said I was like an egg. So I’ve always fit in well with Chinese culture.
In more specific living terms, live in Osaka if you can tokyo as a backup. The bigger the city, the easier it is to find a group. The salaries are basically equal between japan and China. Cost of living in China is about half, if you want to travel around the country or go out at all. If you have never been to China, you may find it difficult to deal with the lack of personal space and some other cultural issues that japan doesn’t have as much. My mother loved visiting japan but she love the sights in china but couldn’t stand he atmosphere when she visited.
It really depends on the individual experience I think. I have many more friends back in China that I keep in touch with after 2 years away than I’ve made living in japan for 2 years. So it really is a case by case thing. Also you can usually get a much better vacation package with a job in china than japan. The workload and lack of holidays are major contributors to me deciding to go back to china. Also I just miss it. I think of China as home still. Never felt that ways here.
All that said, I would discourage anyone from coming to Japan if that is where they want to be. Still one of my favorite countries to travel in! |

Don't automatically assume you'll have to physically run from state to state.
Check the websites of the following:
• The bureau of investigation in the state you'll be visiting for info on applying for a criminal background report. If you're required to get an FBI background report, see Identity History Summary Checks.
• The state's Secretary of State website (where your university is located) to see what's required for degree authentication for countries that are not signatories of the Hague Convention.

Fortunately I don’t need and FBI check this time, just a state or local one. I’ll look into the degree authentication on the Secretary of State website though. Thanks for the reply. |
