Hi
I have the opportunity to teach in Xining for a few months leading up to the summer.
Does anyone have any information about working/living here?
Thanks in advance |

Xining is super back of beyond. It's not a terrible place, but VERY isolated. Qinghai is gigantic and this capital is on the far east. It's really like living in Gansu more than anything else. You can take the trains or fly to Xinjiang, and theoretically you could go to Tibet (I would personally go through Golmund though).
For a few months it wouldn't be bad, I don't think. Especially if you wouldn't be there in or near winter when it's frigid. I imagine the number of foreigners is tiny, though. And like every Chinese city bar a few, there's not much to see or do (couple of cool mosques I'd like to see myself).
I would just make sure about the accommodations and pay relative to work, like any short-term job. |

I lived there for a year about 8 years ago? Maybe a little more than 8 years ago? Can't quite remember.
I went back about 5 years ago for a visit.
Umm.. I really liked it. The climate in the summer is just amazing. Winters can be rough, but survivable.
I liked how multi-ethnic the city seems. Chinese, Tibetan, Muslim, and a number of different foreigners running around the city.
I'm kind of a homebody, which makes me think out requires me for how we spend our time might be different, but I was fine with hanging out in a coffee shop or at a bar reading a book or playing cards with a friend. |
